Valve corporations digital game distribution platform Steam is under fire! French court has ruled against Steam to allowing EU users or particularly gaming community to resell their digital games.
UFC-Que Choisir, a french consumer company was in battle with Valve for the past 4 years. This week they achieved a major milestone. The French court has ordered in favor of the consumer group and rules against Steam.
Valve’s stance that they sell games online and if a user purchases game, they have subscribed to play it by themselves only. This means that they can not share that copy of the game with their friends. But the courts disagreed saying that its against the EU consumer policy.
Valve has been given some definite time to change their business model to include reselling of the games online.
However Valve have denied that they will be changing their business model. “We disagree with the decision of the Paris Court of First Instance and will appeal it…The decision will have no effect on Steam while the case is on appeal” Valve tells Kotaku. They will be further challenging this case in the higher courts.
